Citalopram is the most powerful of serotonin reuptake inhibitors that is used as an antidepressant, but causes sexual dysfunction. Whether the citalopram-induced sexual dysfunction is a result of gonadotropin-releasing hormone , kisspeptin or RF-amide related peptide the amendment is unknown. Effects of of acute and chronic treatments of the number of neurons and mRNA expression of GnRH, kisspeptin and RFRP were measured citalopram 20 . In addition, projections of RFRP fibers in preoptic – GnRH neurons were analyzed using the double label immunohistochemistry. Receptor expression of 14 different types of serotonin mRNAs was investigated in laser dissected neurons immunostained simple RFRP in the hypothalamus dorso , but only 11 types of receptors were identified. Acute treatment with citalopram did not affect sexual behavior, whereas the total length of intromission was reduced with chronic treatment. There was no effect in expression of kisspeptin in the anterior periventricular nucleus and the arcuate nucleus and expression of GnRH in the POA following treatment with citalopram. However, the number RFRP neurons projections in the MHD and fiber to the POA was significantly increased after chronic treatment citalopram, suggesting that citalopram -induced inhibition of sexual behavior involves modulation of of serotonin receptors via RFRP in the MHD.
